Eco-Friendly, and Fast Too

Dave Southern has a Minor with a difference.

It runs on vegetable oil.

Dave's Minor is a 1970 pick-up. He's had it since 1983 and it was his first car. Over the years it has inherited Morris Marina running gear, including disk brakes and rear axle, an anti roll bar from a Ford Escort, Saab gas shocks on the front end and a Saab servo and master cylinder. This is in order to help stop the 2.0L Perkins turbo diesel engine with the 5 speed Ford Sierra gearbox. It gets 65mpg on a run and 110mph on the straight. Home made wheels, 13" Marina centres welded into 14" Ford Granada rims running 185x14 tyres. Rebuilt wooden back end.

The car gets painted annually with agricultural paint, it goes on thick and the kids can help paint it. The car is in daily use and Dave is rightly proud of it. He is currently chasing a Salisbury axle from a Triumph Dolomite Sprint so that he doesn't pop the half shafts.

The diesel conversion is mainly so that Dave can run on home made vegetable oil fuel, (see www.veggievan.org). Power and economy, who could ask for more?
