Chassis Codes

The Chassis Code is stamped onto a metal plate that is usually screwed to the engine bay bulkhead on the right hand side of the vehicle.

Often, for instance if the car has been resprayed, this plate is missing or overpainted. In the UK this is not an MoT (warrant of fitness) failure because chassis/VIN plates are not required for cars made pre-1980. However, I recommend that you get an original-spec blank plate from one of the many Minor Specialists and have your chassis code stamped onto it. This will save any overzealous MoT inspectors failing your car for no reason.

As well as possibly being a legal requirement in your country, the chassis code can tell you a lot about your car. Each letter or number in the chassis code means something different. Take a look at the charts below and compare your chassis code against them. You may just learn that your 'original' convertible used to be a two-soor saloon ...
