Airbrush Crazy

Bastardised Rating: 8

For some people, owning a Minor just isn't enough. Some Moggie owners just have to make their's stand out from the crowd. Stephan Newington has been working on this artwork project for the past five years. The subject is a 1958 ex-Royal Mail split-screen van that has been rebuilt and airbrushed from top to bottom!

I'll let Stephan tell you the story...

"The van, although rebuilt in every detail, will, I hope, never be fired up as I would like to see it bought as an exhibition piece. When I bought the van five years ago it was a red customised street machine which I stripped right down to all single components, which were all in turn sandblasted and treated so as not to rust. I then proceded to airbrush every part, including every nut, bolt and washer.

"The van has been rebuilt extremely carefully, so as not to damage any of the paintwork. This, you can appreciate took a lot of time, patience and inevitably some frustration.

The seats and inside the back compartment have been button upholstered using cream and purple leather, supplied by Connoley's, who you may know supplies Rolls Royce and Jaguar. This complements the outside which is sprayed aubergine with a generous hint of red pearlescent - strong at the front fading lighter towards the rear of the van.

Instead of doing just creative work on the van I used it as a piece of canvas and created a painting. The van has spotlights underneath to show off the artwork as well as an oval perspex floor in the back to see even more detail. It can be plugged into normal 240 volt mains electricity to show it off in all its glory. The local paper in Jersey has done two articles on my van and I had a lot of interest at a vintage car rally held on the island recently.
